Our History Afternoon

The history sessions, created to celebrate our 40th Anniversary, began at 1:00 PM and ran to 6:00 PM, including breaks. These were all held in the Dataw Island Club’s Carolina Room.

Much to everyone’s delight, we found out the South Carolina House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring our 40th anniversary. It is a great summary of Dataw Island’s evolution. I’m still trying to track down who wrote it, but the historical facts seem accurate.

Our afternoon’s first event was a talk by Dr. Larry Rowland and Edie Rodgers about the circumstances leading up to the Rowland brothers’ sale of Dataw Island to ALCOA. The second event was a panel discussion covering the 1980s and 1990s, and the third event was a panel discussion covering the 2000s and 2010s.

The whole afternoon was recorded, and we will post a link to the video once it’s available.

While we thoroughly enjoyed showcasing our treasures last week, we understand that not everyone had the opportunity to participate. Fear not! Below, you can glimpse some images and even an old ALCOA marketing video. While we eagerly await the full event video, we invite you to peruse this article.

Charting the Course: A Prelude to 40 Years on Dataw Island

Below are a few charts shown before Dr. Larry Rowland and Edie Rodgers’ talk. The last page contains the image that launched Dataw Island’s development as a residential planned community. Larry will tell the story when the video is available. But here’s a hint: that’s quite a few kids to put through college.

Below are a few more charts shown before this panel discussion. Below them is a nine-minute movie made by ALCOA Marketing over 30 years ago and soon after our Dataw Island Marina was opened. It is posted here to give you a glimpse into our island’s past and a few of the early pioneers who bought property here in our earliest years. The speakers are introduced at the end of the video.
