History & Learning Center

In 2016, after a decade of work to bring it to life, the Dataw Island History & Learning Center opened next to the Sams Plantation Ruins. The museum is the first permanent home for our collection of artifacts unearthed since the construction of our community began in 1983. It contains a large diorama summarizing our history, photographs, original Sams family artifacts donated to us for safekeeping, artwork, and display cases with objects found in the ruins. We also use it as a meeting room and presentation facility for DHF members. The building is conveniently located near the Sams Plantation Tabby Complex and Sams Family Cemetery, has parking, and is a starting point for docent-led tours.

Our History & Learning Center is located at 285 Dataw Dr, St Helena Island, South Carolina  29920. Open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. We live in a gated community and you are welcome to visit us.

However, you must contact the Dataw Historic Foundation ahead of time so we can arrange a gate pass for you.

Please make a request via our JOIN US page or by emailing the foundation.
